Protect Yourself Against Irresponsible Drivers
New Jersey requires all vehicle owners to carry car insurance. However, drivers can now buy insurance policies that do not provide liability coverage. That means the insurance company does not pay for injuries caused by their drivers. The good news is that you can protect yourself with Uninsured (UM) and Underinsured (UIM) Motorist Coverage. Your own insurance company offers this coverage to pay you for injuries caused by drivers with no insurance, insurance without liability coverage and hit and run drivers. For example, if an erratic driver cuts you off, forcing you off the road and causing injury, your own insurance company will pay for your injuries even if you cannot identify or find the other car. If you are injured by an uninsured, underinsured or hit and run driver, you should immediately notify your insurance company of your potential claim or there is a risk that the insurance company will deny the claim.
You should review your insurance to ensure you have the maximum UM/UIM coverage to protect your family members and yourself. Most insurance companies offer up to $500,000 of UM/UIM coverage. RAM Law offers free consultations to review and explain the legal consequences of your insurance coverage.
